When I was 6 years old, my family bought a new sofa. My dad and brother lifted the old 1970’s brown plaid sofa and began carrying it out the door when my brother said “This is the sofa we had when you were born, doesn’t that make you sad?” Well…I hadn’t thought about that before but it didn’t take much to stir up an emotional reaction in my sensitive soul. I cried as they carried it out to the patio. I sat with it while we waited for the Goodwill truck to come pick it up. That sofa was a part of my family and it was leaving us. Ok, don’t laugh at me…I have SOFA ISSUES.
Fast forward 30 years, to me - shopping for a sofa to replace our 14 year old microfiber sectional we bought when we were newly married. Like that nasty old plaid sofa from my childhood, our sofa had a history. I had nursed both of my babies on that sofa. Watched every last episode of Lost (including the disappointing series finale) and lived through the Netflix DVD rental era on that sofa. I specifically remember falling asleep on it one night in November 2008, when I was pregnant with my son. My husband woke me up, pointed to Jesse Jackson crying on the television as I watched the news announce that our country would have its first Black president. “I’m sorry I woke you - I didn’t want you miss this important part of history,” he said.
I had high expectations when searching for a sofa to replace our former. It not only needed to be the right color and material but also needed to feel like part of the family…like all our sofas had been. When our Floyd Detroit sofa showed up, it just felt right. It was a turning point in our lives - like we’d finally graduated from IKEA and Ebay and moved up in the world. And I know one day I’ll look back and say “Hey that’s the sofa that lived with us through a worldwide pandemic and a political revolution.”
After revealing our sofa in my Instagram feed, I’ve been getting tons of questions and comments about it! So I’ll be answering the most commonly asked questions here.
Is it comfortable?
Yes, it is VERY comfortable. The comfort level actually took me by surprise. The corner where the chaise is located is the prime location. The one we all fight over.
Do the cushions move?
The cushions aren’t actually attached to the frame so this question is very valid! It looks as if they would slip around and you would constantly need to be adjusting them, however, the design of the frame holds the cushions in place with friction! At the end of the day, I always fluff the throw pillows on my sofa and so far - the Floyd cushions have required little to no fluffing!
Is it pet-proof?
The frame of the sofa is coated steel and birch plywood, so there is no tempting vertical fabric corner for our kitty to use as a scratching post. Which is one of things I love the most about this sofa! Since de-clawing wasn’t an option for us, we needed a sofa that could live a decade without getting destroyed by our cat.
Is it stain resistant?
Yes! Floyd’s sofa fabric is thoughtfully designed to be stain-resistant & is extremely easy to clean with just soap and water. More info about cleaning can be found here.
Tell me more about your picture ledge shelf!
Our photo ledge shelf was created with The Floyd Shelf Brackets in white and a 1-1/4" thick maple board. My husband purchased the piece of maple, cut it to size, sanded it, created grooves using a router with a V-groove bit, and then finished it with a clear coat of water based polyurethane. The water based polyurethane keeps the board from turning yellow - so our shelf will always match the wood framing on our sofa.
Floyd is running a summer sale from now until July 5, 2020. Get up to $125 off with code SUMMERTIME.
